Chippenham were just edged out in a fantastic U13 County Cup Final last Wednesday night. It went right to the last ball with Chippenham needing two to win, but a full and straight delivery went straight to cover leaving Chippenham agonisingly one run short.
Swindon batted first on a beautiful evening in front of a large crowd and set a challenging total of 118. Jake Goodwin and Jack Harris both completed their 30 runs before having to retire for Swindon. Kyle George (2/19), Harry Collins (3/22) and Ollie Alcorn (1/16) were the pick of the Chippenham bowlers from their four overs.
Chippenham's run chase was well paced and the run rate never got above 8 an over. H.Collins (retired 30) and James Gaunt (11) put on 46 for the first wicket of 8 overs. Two quick wickets fell before Sam Graham(retired 30) and Todd Richardson (18) left Chippenham needing 18 from the last 3 overs. Sam Enderby and George Roberts came to the wicket needing 6 from 1 over. This came down to 3 from 3 balls when two Swindon players collided going for a catch leading to the Swindon captain Jack Harris having to leave the field with a leg injury. Swindon bowler Harry Chevis held his and Swindons nerve bowling a superb final three balls to leave Chippenham one run short. Swindon now go on to represent Wiltshire against the Dorset champions this month.

Chippenham 1st XI travelled to Cheltenham and were keen to make up for the disappointing performance last Saturday. Chippenham senior sides had a lot of unavailabilities this weekend and this resulted in the cancellation of the 3rd XI game.
Cheltenham won the toss and asked Chippenham to bat. Chippenham lost Tom Young early in the game which brought Jack Humphris to the crease. He supported Rob Woodman well before being trapped LBW for 19. Tim Rowson fell quickly giving Cheltenham a lot of confidence. Rich Bates then chipped in with a solid 22 before being caught bringing captain Paul Bates to the wicket. Paul and Rob added 50 more runs before Rob Woodman was caught down the leg side by the Cheltenham keeper for 62. Unfortunately Paul Bates followed quickly for 32 putting Cheltenham back in the driving seat with Chippenham 149-6. Keeper John Rumble joined Trevor Lloyd at the wicket with 18 overs to go and considerable consolidation work to do. A good partnership of 97 runs between Lloyd (57) and Rumble (25no) brought Chippenham to a very respectable 241 from their 50 overs. In reply Cheltenham started well and put on 108 for the first wicket. Openers bowlers Ward and Woodman bowled good line and length but were subject to a good batting performance from the Cheltenham opening batsmen. Freegard and Fry replaced the openers with tidy spell of bowling before the spin twins Rich Bates and Trevor Lloyd took over the bowling duties. Cheltenham found Rich and Trev very hard to get away and run rate began to dry up. The pressured bowling and fielding performance took its toll and Cheltenham went from being 108-1 to 116-2. The required run rate continued to grow resulting in Cheltenham requiring 8 runs an over in the latter stages. This proved too much and Cheltenham were bowled out for 224. Wickets for Rob Woodman (1), Lee Ward (2), Rich Bates (2) and Trevor Lloyd (2). Two great run outs made a big difference to the performance also. A great team performance from Chippenham with the bat and ball. Everyone pulled together under pressure and proved that team work is essential in cricket. Next week Chippenham entertain Thornbury at home.
The 2nd XI entertained Bath at home. With a depleted side, Chippenham struggled to 132 all out in 41 overs. In reply Bath knocked off the total for 3 wickets in 22.4 overs.
The 3rd XI game was cancelled due to player unavailability. |

U13s have had a good start to the season winning 5 out of 6 in the Bath League. 50's from Ollie Alcorn and Ewen Kenny. Wickets have been shared around with Charlie White, Andrew Sharp and Ollie Alcorn all taking good figures. We have a County cup Semi Final this week away at Trowbridge and hopefully we can secure a home final. The Wiltshire League has been hit by the weather with 2 games rained off and this weekend we had a good game but were beaten by a strong Swindon side. With a large squad many have made good contributions and there is plenty of competition for places. |

It was a disappointing weekend for the senior teams at Chippenham CC with all three teams suffering losses.
The 1st XI entertained Warminster at home. Warminster batted first and scored 230-9 in their 50 overs. Richard Bates took 3 wickets, Trevor Lloyd took 2 wickets and Rob Woodman took 2 wickets. In reply Chippenham got off to a good start with an opening stand of 55 between openers Woodman and Young. After the loss of Young for 18, Woodman followed for 33. This triggered a collapse and Chippenham were 86-6. A good partnership between Trev LLoyd (30) and George Sykes (21) saw a reasonable recovery but it was too little too late and Chippenham were bowled out for 160. This was a real disappointment against a very average bowling attack.
The 2nd XI travelled to Frocester. Chippenham batted first and scored 246 in their 45 overs. Runs came from Clyde Williams (32), Hughey Pike (85) and Phil Adams (37). In reply Frocester reached their target in the final over with 2 wickets to spare. Wickets came from Arran Merryweather (5), Steve Merryweather (2) and Craig Fry (1). Pete Sykes afterwards felt that it was a game that Chippenham could have won.
The 3rd XI entertained Biddestone 3rd's. Chippenham bowled Biddestone out for 60. Wickets came from Alex Graham (4), Andy Cozens (3) and Ian Charles (3). In reply Chippenham were all out for 34. This was very disappointing.

The 1st XI were the only game to start on Saturday but the above picture was the view most of the time! Chippenham lost the toss and were asked to Bat by the Illminster captain. The game only lasted 7.4 overs before the heavens opened again and brought the game to a premature end. Chippenham were 30-1. Rob Woodman scored 19 before playing on. Tom Young and Rich Coughtrie were both not out. Next week Chippenham entertain Warminster at home.
The 2nd XI game against Corsham was cancelled as was the 3rd XI game against Highworth. |
